ARENI SEV

The Timeless Armenian Variety

The Legacy of the Areni Sev Grape

The Areni Sev grape, also known as Areni Noir, is a dark-skinned varietal native to the Vayots Dzor region. This grape is celebrated not only for its exceptional qualities but also for its historical significance. Its roots trace back around 6,100 years to the Areni-1 cave complex—the site of the world’s oldest known winery—highlighting its integral role in Armenia’s winemaking heritage.

Areni Sev: One of the Oldest Armenian Grape Varieties

.

In 2011, the Areni-1 cave revealed archaeological treasures that spoke to Armenia’s long-standing relationship with winemaking. Sophisticated tools, fermentation vessels, and wine presses discovered here showcase the enduring importance of the Areni grape, adapted perfectly to the region’s unique terroir and climate.

Nestled within the rugged terrain of Vayots Dzor, the Areni grape has flourished for millennia. The continental climate of warm summers and cold winters creates an environment where this late-ripening variety thrives.

The grape holds an important role, symbolizing Armenia’s legacy and historic relationship with winemaking. The findings in this cave demonstrate that the Areni Sev grape was cultivated and transformed into wine thousands of years ago as well. These discoveries connect the grape to a rich tradition, one that has been passed down through generations, cementing Areni Sev’s status as a cornerstone of Armenian winemaking and cultural heritage.

Signature of the Areni Sev Grape

Distinction and Resilience

.

The Areni Sevgrape has flourished in the Vayots Dzor region thanks to its remarkable adaptability to this unique environment. Vayots Dzor’s elevation offers cooler temperatures that balance the intense sun exposure of the semi-desert climate, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and develop complex flavors. The rocky, volcanic soil with sedimentary rocks provides the grape with the qualities that later shape the structure and character of the wine. Volcanic soil gives elegance to the wine, while sedimentary rocks are responsible for the wine’s depth.

In this environment, preserved from phylloxera and free from the filter of American rootstocks, the vines grow on their own roots, allowing them to fully express their identity. These self-rooted vines develop a natural resilience, extracting water and nutrients in perfect proportion from the subsoil. This process enriches the grapes with the subtle yet profound elements of this great terroir, shaping a wine that is truly unique and deeply reflective of its origin.

Areni’s resilience is evident in its ability to thrive in these conditions, where other grapes might struggle. Its thick skin protects it from the harsh sun and cold nights, ensuring the fruit keeps its rich flavor profile and qualities necessary for exquisite and incomparable Kutque wines.

In the contemporary wine landscape, Areni Sev has begun to carve out its niche, drawing comparisons to Burgundy’s Pinot Noir, not only for its elegance but also for its ability to produce wines of depth and complexity. As the world increasingly seeks unique and authentic wine flavors and experiences, Areni Sev’s historical roots and distinctive character position it as a rising star—a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by wine lovers across the globe.

A Celebration of Tradition

Aygekut: The Ritual of Harvest

The harvest season in Vayots Dzor is a time for celebration, marked by age-old rituals that breathe life into the vineyards. As the grapes reach their peak ripeness, the air fills with the sounds of laughter, songs, and dances, echoing the joy of the occasion. Community gatherings are a hallmark of this time, where harvesting becomes a collective endeavor. This ritual, known in Armenia as aygekut, inspires the name “Kutque,” capturing the spirit of tradition and togetherness at the heart of our craft.

Care and Craftsmanship

.

When the timing is determined, our Areni Sev grapes are hand-harvested with precision and care to capture their fullest expression and to minimize damage. This artisanal approach respects the grape’s integrity and honors Armenian winemaking traditions.

From Vine . . .

.

The intense sun of Vayots Dzor’s highlands and its rich soil give the grapes their distinctive character. The harvest begins when the vine gets the most from the sun and soil, and the natural cycle enters the “aygekut” stage.

Hand-harvesting ensures only the finest fruit is selected for the wines. Once gathered, the grapes are transported to the winery, where they are gently sorted.

. . . to Wine

.

The winemaking process starts with destemming the grapes and allowing the natural yeasts on the grape skins to initiate the fermentation process. Armenian amphorae, known as “karas,” are frequently used for aging–an ancient practice deeply rooted in the region’s winemaking history. The Areni Sev grape’s thick skins and high acidity contribute to a remarkable range of styles, from light and elegant to those with rich complexity and aging potential. This adaptability ensures that Areni Sev wines stand out with their balance, structure, and sophistication.

Once aging is complete, and the wine has reached its ideal expression, it is carefully bottled. Each bottle embodies the dedication and craftsmanship of the winemakers, showcasing the story of the Areni Sev grape and the Vayots Dzor terroir.

The craftsmanship culminates in sealing the depth and elegance in our tailored bottles, which incept the exclusive Kutque experience even before unsealing.
